Macquarie University
Educational training platform
Project Background
I was hired by Macquarie University to carry out the research and design of a new learning platform for students. As part of the cyber security hub, I was responsible for the end-to-end design of a training platform, where students could practice their cyber security skills.
The Team
The team at Macquarie consisted of four people; one project manager, two developers and myself. Macquarie University also worked closely with TAFE, UTS and Microsoft through out the project. Learning content for the project was provided by lecturers from Macquarie University.
My Role
As I was the lead UX & UI designer working on this project I was responsible for all aspects of the design process.

I led the user testing sessions, carried out qualitative and quantitate research.  I designed both the wireframes and the high-fidelity designs and prototypes. I worked closely with project managers, developers, lecturers and external stakeholders at all stages of the design process.
The Process
1. UX Research
When I started the project there was a prototype of the platform that had already been created. I was asked to completely re-design the platform as we would not be developing the pre-existing prototype. I used the pre-existing prototype to conducted user testing sessions with current Macquarie University students. I set up one hour testing session where I asked students to complete a number of tasks using the prototype. I took note of any issues that arose. I also carried out surveys to gather qualitative and quantitative information. I colour coded my findings to help me prioritise which key features need to be included in the new designs. I also look at what competitors are doing for insportation and to help me think of solutions.
2. Wireframing
I start out by sketching some ideas to address the key features that I outlined during the research phase. Using a pen and paper allows me to quickly ideate and generate ideas. I then use Figma to design wireframes. At the wireframing stage I am mainly focusing on layout and functionality. Main goal is to encompass all the key features that were highlighted during the research phase.

Once the wireframes are completed I show them to the internal team and get feedback from the developer, project manager and lecturer.
3. UI Design & Prototyping
I created a design system that included typography, colour palettes, iconography and design components. I used inspiration that I found during the research phase to create high-fidelity designs for each page. I then turn the designs into a functioning prototype. This allows the developer to see how the platform will function and any micro interactions and hover states. I then show the designs to out internal team and gather feedback from the developers and project manager.
4 Development & Testing
I handed the designs over to the development team and provided them with the necessary graphics and images at varying breakpoints. I assisted the development team with any questions that they had and provided feedback to them.

Once the platform was launched and students were using it, I carried out further user testing. I attended the classes and observed the students using the platform. At the end of the class I asked students for their feedback. I gathered all of the suggestions, comments and ideas that the students had. I complied a list of improvements for the platform and discussed them with my team. We looked at which improvements would be feasible for us and started working towards them.
